"Trout" Quintet Quartettsatz

This 1986 Denon recording features the Smetana Quartet performing Franz Schubert's Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667, famously known as the Trout Quintet, alongside the Quartettsatz in C minor, D. 703. The release highlights the refined ensemble work of the Smetana Quartet, a Czech group renowned for their decades-long dedication to the chamber music canon, joined by bassist František Pošta and pianist Josef Hála. The production reflects Denon’s commitment to early digital recording technology, which was designed to capture the acoustic clarity and balance of chamber ensembles with high fidelity.

The recording is part of a wave of digital-era reissues and new sessions that elevated the technical standards for classical music distribution in the late 1980s. By pairing the expansive, lyrical Trout Quintet with the dramatic urgency of the Quartettsatz, the album provides a focused portrait of Schubert’s chamber style. Denon’s presentation aimed for a naturalistic, studio-captured sound that emphasized the interplay between the strings and the piano, a hallmark of their sophisticated engineering aesthetic during this period.
