Where it came from
Released in 1986 on the Chrysalis label, U-Vox stands as the final studio album featuring the band’s classic lineup, including Midge Ure and Billy Currie. Recorded during a period of transition for the synth-pop pioneers, the album marked a deliberate shift toward a more polished, orchestrated sound, incorporating session musicians and a broader brass arrangement that diverged from the stark, electronic austerity of their earlier work.
The album's cover design reflects the sleek, minimalist aesthetic favored by the band throughout the mid-eighties, often credited to the art direction team at Chrysalis working closely with the band members. While the record received a mixed critical reception at the time due to its departure from the grittier textures of albums like Vienna, it remains a notable historical marker of the band's late-career experimentation and their attempt to bridge the gap between their New Romantic roots and a more accessible, commercial pop production style.
