Where it came from
Released in 1984 on the C.R.B. Records label, Ubo Une Ngwo by Egbe Belu Ugo Belu Une Nwo stands as a significant artifact of the Nigerian highlife and Igbo traditional music scenes. During this era, independent labels in Nigeria played a vital role in capturing the evolving soundscapes of the country, blending indigenous rhythmic structures with the contemporary studio production techniques of the early 1980s.
The album reflects the artistic vision of Egbe Belu Ugo Belu Une Nwo, whose work is often categorized within the broader movement of Igbo guitar-band music. This genre was defined by its melodic, intricate guitar arrangements and narrative-driven lyrics, which functioned as both entertainment and social commentary. Like many regional releases of this period, the design and production served to preserve specific cultural expressions at a time when the recording industry in Nigeria was undergoing rapid expansion and transition.
