Ukele-Ukwani War Dance

Ukele-Ukwani War Dance, released on the Ajeh Records label as AJLP 1003, serves as a significant artifact of the highlife and traditional music movements emerging from Nigeria's Delta region during the mid-twentieth century. Produced by Abbi Ndokwa, the record captures the rhythmic intensity and cultural fervor of the Ukwani people, documenting traditional war dance music that had transitioned from community ritual performances into the burgeoning recording studios of the era.

The album is representative of a period when independent labels like Ajeh sought to preserve regional Nigerian musical heritage amidst the influence of Western pop. By recording ensembles that specialized in the Ukele style, the label aimed to provide a permanent sonic archive for local listeners while capturing the percussive, call-and-response vocal structures inherent to the genre. It remains a valued document for ethnomusicologists interested in the transition of tribal folk music into the commercially pressed vinyl format.
