Where it came from
Released in 1988 by the boutique label Sutton Sound, this collection of Ukrainian choral church music represents a significant effort to document Eastern liturgical traditions for a Western audience during the waning years of the Soviet era. The record serves as an archival project, bringing together centuries of liturgical compositions that were frequently suppressed or restricted under the Soviet policy of state-mandated secularism, thereby providing a rare auditory window into the spiritual heritage of the region.
The album is noted for its understated production and scholarly intent, focusing on the preservation of polyphonic arrangements and traditional chant structures that define the Ukrainian choral aesthetic. While the specific identities of the performers and the original recording engineers remain obscure, the selection was curated to highlight the evolution of religious music from the seventeenth through the early twentieth centuries, emphasizing the emotional resonance of the liturgy rather than commercial appeal.
