Where it came from
This 2004 release functions as a reissue in the Motown 'Icon' series, designed to preserve the legacy of Stevie Wonder's formative years at the label. It pairs his 1966 breakout hit 'Uptight (Everything's Alright)' with the 1969 introspective ballad 'Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday.' These tracks represent the evolution of his sound from the high-energy, danceable soul of his youth to the more nuanced, sophisticated songwriting that defined his transition into adulthood.
The packaging and curatorial choice to bundle these specific singles reflect the mid-2000s archival trend of re-packaging classic vinyl singles for a new generation of collectors. While Stevie Wonder’s original recordings were produced under the legendary Motown hit-making machine—often involving the writing and production talents of figures like Sylvia Moy and Henry Cosby—this specific pressing was an effort by Universal Music Group to maintain the accessibility of these seminal tracks on 7-inch vinyl format.
