Uuno Klami: Kalevala Suite - Ahti Sonninen: Seitsemän Veljestä - Kalervo Tuukkanen: Karhunpyynti (The Bear Hunt)

Released by the Finnish label Fennica under the catalog number SS 5, this recording serves as a significant archival document of mid-20th-century Finnish symphonic music. The collection gathers orchestral works by three prominent national composers: Uuno Klami, known for his impressionist orchestration; Ahti Sonninen, recognized for his accessible melodic style; and Kalervo Tuukkanen, a composer deeply invested in Finnish folk and thematic traditions.

The suite features Klami’s Kalevala-inspired music, which draws from Finland’s national epic to evoke mythological imagery through rich, modernist textures. These compositions represent a period when Finnish composers were actively navigating the balance between nationalist romanticism and the shifting influences of European modernism. The recording is valued by collectors not only for the scarcity of the Fennica pressing but also for its role in preserving the specific interpretative approach to these lesser-known Nordic orchestral works.
