Why it matters

This 1978 Supraphon release captures a quintessential selection of Czech and Moravian Christmas music, reflecting the enduring tradition of choral and folk carol arrangements common in Central European culture. As part of the extensive Supraphon catalog, it remains a nostalgic touchstone for collectors interested in the vocal music traditions preserved under the label during the late twentieth century.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the state-owned Czechoslovak label Supraphon in 1978, Už Z Hor Zní Zvon (The Bell Rings from the Mountains) is a compilation album featuring a curated selection of traditional and folk-inspired Christmas music. Produced during a period of strict cultural regulation under the normalization era, the record served as a nostalgic nod to domestic customs and holiday sentiments, blending choral arrangements and orchestral folk music that resonated with the aesthetic expectations of the Czechoslovak listening public at the time.

The album reflects the era's focus on maintaining traditional national folk culture through state-sanctioned media. Designed with a classic, minimalist sleeve typical of Supraphon’s long-running catalog, the art direction emphasized a dignified and seasonal atmosphere. It was received as a standard holiday staple, appearing in many households as a reliable soundtrack for the festive season, reinforcing the label's role as the primary custodian of both classical and folk recordings in the region.
