Where it came from
Released by His Master's Voice in 1981, this EP features the work of the prolific Gujarati film music composer Avinash Vyas. Vyas was a central figure in the mid-20th-century Gujarati music industry, known for bridging the gap between traditional folk motifs and the evolving sensibilities of regional cinema. The 7EPE 10248 catalog number marks this as part of HMV's extended play series, which provided a vehicle for listeners to enjoy popular cinematic and devotional tracks in a portable format during the late vinyl era.
The composition draws upon the rich lyrical traditions of Gujarati romantic and devotional poetry, centered around the imagery of the flute—a motif often associated with Krishna and the longing of the soul. The production follows the signature aesthetic of Vyas’s work, which favored melodic clarity and vocal-centric arrangements. While regional releases of this period are often overshadowed by major national labels, this record is recognized by ethnomusicologists and regional enthusiasts as a representative artifact of the late-career output of one of Gujarat’s most influential musical architects.
