Provenance

Where it came from

Commissioned by the publisher Anton Diabelli in 1819, the original project invited fifty composers to write a single variation on his own simple waltz theme. While most contributors are now forgotten, Ludwig van Beethoven famously rejected the invitation initially, only to produce his monumental 33 Variations, Op. 120, which transformed the trivial theme into a complex exploration of musical form. This specific 1972 Archiv Produktion release captures the historical scope of the endeavor by pairing Beethoven’s landmark work with the lesser-known variations contributed by other contemporary composers.

Jörg Demus, a highly regarded Austrian pianist known for his scholarly approach and expertise in the Viennese classical repertoire, performs these pieces with a focus on historical authenticity. Released under the Archiv Produktion label, which specialized in historically informed performances and archival recordings, the set reflects the meticulous research and aesthetic values of 1970s classical music production. The design emphasizes the archival nature of the project, presenting the collection as a definitive historical document of the Diabelli Variation phenomenon.
