Arcangelo Corelli composed his twelve Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, toward the end of the 17th century, though they were not officially published until 1714 in Amsterdam. The eighth concerto, known as the 'Christmas Concerto,' was written specifically for performance on Christmas Eve and remains one of the most celebrated examples of the Baroque concerto grosso form, characterized by its interplay between a small group of soloists and the full string orchestra.

This 1978 release on the RCA Red Seal label features the Slovak Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Bohdan Warchal. Warchal, a violinist who founded the ensemble in 1960, was widely respected for his dedication to historical performance standards and the precise, polished tone of his orchestra. This particular pressing was part of a broader mid-to-late 20th-century effort by RCA to bring standard Baroque repertoire to a wider audience through high-fidelity recordings of Eastern European chamber ensembles.
