Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1981 by Telefunken as part of the monumental project to record the complete sacred cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach, this collection represents a milestone in the historical performance movement. Conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt, the recordings were notable for utilizing period instruments and boys' choirs, a pioneering approach at the time that sought to realize Bach's music with the tonal colors and textures intended by the composer.

The box set was designed to consolidate various previously released cantata volumes into a cohesive Advent and New Year liturgical cycle. The aesthetic of the Telefunken Das Alte Werk series is characterized by scholarly rigor and minimalist, informative cover art, reflecting the label's commitment to musicological accuracy. Upon its release, the set was praised by critics for its intellectual depth and its foundational role in standardizing historically informed performance practice for Baroque vocal music.
