Where it came from
Released in 1973 on the Fonit Cetra International label, Wendo / Watchi-Wara is a rare afro-funk single by the ensemble M'Bamina. The group was part of a burgeoning movement of African musicians based in Europe, specifically Paris, who sought to fuse traditional rhythms with the burgeoning sounds of soul, funk, and jazz-fusion that were dominating the international club scenes of the early 1970s.
The record is a hallmark of the label's short-lived endeavor to distribute world music to a broader European audience. Its design is typical of the era's minimalist label-issued sleeves, prioritizing clear identification of the exotic, rhythmic compositions contained within. While the record remained a deep cut for many years, it has since been rediscovered by crate-diggers and DJs, praised for its driving percussion and authentic synthesis of Congolese influences with international funk production styles.
