Where it came from
Released in 2024 through the Berlin-based label Staatsakt, this album is a collaborative project featuring actor and musician Robert Stadlober performing the texts of the influential Weimar Republic-era satirist and journalist Kurt Tucholsky. The work emerges from a tradition of German literary interpretation, aiming to bring Tucholsky’s biting wit and socio-political commentary to a contemporary audience. The record acts as a bridge between historical critique and modern performance, utilizing Stadlober’s recognizable voice to navigate the cynical and humanistic observations of the original writings.
The album's design and conceptual direction emphasize the stark, reflective nature of Tucholsky’s prose. By stripping back the production to highlight the spoken word, the creators sought to capture the essence of the cabaret and political critique movements that defined the interwar period. The release has been received as a meditative retrospective, appreciated primarily by those interested in the preservation of German intellectual history and the intersection of theater and music.
