Where it came from
The 2011 self-titled release by the street artist known as X-Prays was issued on the Bowery Records label, catalog number BR-012. Emerging from the gritty aesthetic of early 21st-century Lower East Side street art, the project reflects the artist's transition from visual stencil work to auditory expression, capturing the raw, improvisational energy of the New York City underground scene during that era.
The design of the record mirrors the visual language established by X-Prays in his public mural works, utilizing stark, high-contrast imagery and minimalist graphic treatments. By incorporating recurring motifs found in his gallery installations, the packaging serves as a conceptual extension of his fine art, intended to ground the listener in the same urban atmosphere that defined his reputation as an elusive yet influential figure in the contemporary art world.
