Where it came from
Released by the state-run Melodiya label in 1981, this recording is part of a broader series dedicated to archiving the landscape of Russian and Soviet literature. The initiative aimed to preserve the oral tradition of Russian poetry, ensuring that the cadence and emotional weight of these works, as recited by contemporary masters, were documented for future generations and educational use across the Soviet Union.
The recording features the acclaimed Soviet poet Mikhail Isakovsky, whose own lyrical style was deeply rooted in traditional folk motifs. By the time this record was issued, Isakovsky’s voice had become synonymous with a certain mid-century Soviet aesthetic. His delivery was intended to be accessible and sincere, prioritizing a clear, rhythmic reading that honored the structure of the featured eighteenth- to twentieth-century verses rather than offering experimental interpretations.
