Where it came from
Released by the state-owned Melodiya label in 1981, this recording is part of a broader pedagogical and cultural initiative to preserve and disseminate the Russian literary canon. The selection features the works of Vasily Zhukovsky and Konstantin Batyushkov, two foundational figures of 19th-century Romanticism who were instrumental in modernizing the Russian literary language and bridging the gap between classical traditions and the subsequent Golden Age.
The production serves as an archival audio document, designed to present these seminal texts through professional dramatic readings. In the context of Soviet cultural policy, such releases were intended to keep classical poetry accessible to a broad audience, serving both as educational tools and as a means of honoring the foundational aesthetics of Russian literature. The design reflects the austere and minimalist aesthetic standard for Melodiya’s literary series, focusing on the historical importance of the poets rather than decorative flair.
