Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the state label Melodiya in 1982, this recording features the renowned Soviet poet and editor Alexander Tvardovsky reciting selections from the canon of Russian poetry. It belongs to a broader tradition of spoken-word cultural preservation, intended to bring the rich history of the Russian literary tradition into the homes of Soviet citizens through the accessible medium of vinyl.

Tvardovsky, best known for his epic poem Vasili Tyorkin, provides a reading style that is deeply grounded in the Russian oral tradition, emphasizing the cadence and emotional weight of the verses. His participation as the primary voice serves as a bridge between the classical poets of the 18th century and the revolutionary fervor of the early 20th century, a stylistic choice that resonated with the educational goals of Soviet cultural institutions during the late Brezhnev era.
