Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the state-owned Melodiya label in 1981, this recording is part of a broader anthology series titled 'Страницы русской поэзии' (Pages of Russian Poetry). Designed to serve an educational and cultural function, these records brought the canon of Russian literature to a wider Soviet audience, preserving the oral tradition of declamation by prominent stage actors and scholars. The choice of Nikolai Nekrasov for this specific release highlights his historical status as a 'poet of the people,' whose verse was central to the Soviet literary curriculum.

The production maintains the austere, formal aesthetic typical of late-period Melodiya releases, which favored archival integrity over commercial flourish. By focusing on the rhythmic and thematic weight of 18th to 20th-century poetry, the label aimed to foster a standardized cultural appreciation for Russian heritage. These records were frequently distributed through the network of state libraries and educational institutions, where they functioned as essential listening for students and literature enthusiasts alike.
