Where it came from
Released by the state-owned Soviet label Melodiya in 1982, this recording is part of the extensive 'Pages of Russian Poetry' series, which sought to preserve and disseminate the canon of Russian literature through spoken-word audio. The series was designed as a cultural resource for educational institutions and literature enthusiasts, reflecting a period where high-culture spoken word occupied a significant place in the Soviet domestic arts landscape.
This specific volume focuses on the foundational work of Alexander Pushkin, often regarded as the father of modern Russian literature. The production utilizes established Soviet actors to deliver the verses, aiming for a formal, declamatory style that prioritized clarity and emotional resonance. The design, typical of Melodiya's catalog releases, favors a minimalist aesthetic that emphasizes the literary pedigree of the content over the technical flashiness of the medium.
