Where it came from
Released in 1969 as a standout track on the album 'My Cherie Amour', 'Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday' was produced by Henry Cosby and written by Ron Miller and Bryan Wells. It emerged during a period of transition for Stevie Wonder as he moved away from the child-star persona of 'Little Stevie' toward the more sophisticated, socially conscious, and introspective songwriting that would define his later career. The song’s nostalgic, mid-tempo ballad structure became a signature sound of the late-sixties Motown era.
The recording is noted for its evocative arrangement, which blends classic soul sensibilities with pop accessibility, reflecting the meticulous production standards of the Tamla-Motown stable. It was well-received by international audiences, reaching the top ten in several countries including the United Kingdom and the United States. Its enduring legacy lies in how it captured a sense of bittersweet reflection, cementing Wonder's reputation as a versatile artist capable of blending profound emotional resonance with mainstream chart success.
