Where it came from
Released in 1969 on the Avenue label, this recording of 'Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday' is a characteristic example of the budget-label market during the late 1960s. Avenue Records, based in the United Kingdom, specialized in producing cover versions of popular hits, often utilizing studio musicians and session vocalists to provide affordable alternatives to the original chart-topping recordings. This release served to capitalize on the song's widespread popularity following its commercial success as a single by Stevie Wonder.
The design of the sleeve adheres to the minimalist, functional aesthetic typical of the Avenue catalog, focusing on utility and quick identification for consumers browsing record bins. As these releases were intended for a general audience rather than audiophile collectors, the production values were modest, prioritizing accessibility over elaborate artistic presentation. While the specific vocalists and session instrumentalists remain uncredited on this particular release, the record stands as a historical artifact of the era's music industry practices regarding cover-version distribution.
