Where it came from
Released in 1971 on the Escort label, this 7-inch single captures a distinctive moment in the evolution of roots reggae. It features the vocal stylings of Little Roy, a foundational figure in the Jamaican music scene known for his soulful delivery. The track 'Yester-Me Yester-You Yesterday' is a reggae interpretation of the song famously popularized by Stevie Wonder, showcasing the trend of Jamaican artists reimagining international pop and soul hits through the lens of early reggae and rocksteady rhythms.
The B-side, 'Yes Sir,' highlights the instrumental prowess of the Matador All Stars, the studio backing band associated with producer Lloyd Daley's Matador label. The production reflects the minimalist, bass-heavy aesthetic characteristic of the era's Kingston studio sessions. Like many Escort releases of the period, the record was primarily intended for local sound system play, serving as a functional piece of dancehall culture before reggae gained widespread global recognition in the following decade.
