Where it came from
Released in 2012 by Manimal Vinyl Records, Your Light Like White Lightning, Your Light Like A Laser Beam served as the debut full-length album for the San Francisco-based group Extra Classic. The band, led by Adrian DiMatteo and Edith Frances, emerged from the city’s vibrant indie scene, blending elements of reggae, dub, and lo-fi pop. The record was conceived during a period of creative experimentation for the duo, drawing heavy inspiration from classic Jamaican dub production techniques while maintaining a contemporary, minimalist aesthetic.
The album’s design reflects the band's penchant for lo-fi, DIY sensibilities, prioritizing a raw and atmospheric sonic landscape that was typical of the mid-2000s and early 2010s independent music circuit. Upon its release, it was met with appreciation from underground music bloggers and critics who noted its hypnotic rhythms and Frances’s distinct vocal delivery. The release cemented Extra Classic's reputation as a genre-defying act capable of bridging the gap between traditional roots-reggae influences and modern experimental indie rock.
