Where it came from
Released in 1988 on the iconic Free Music Production (FMP) label, Zwei Quintette documents the avant-garde explorations of German free jazz multi-instrumentalist Rüdiger Carl. The album captures a pivotal moment in the Berlin improvisational scene, where FMP served as the primary nexus for musicians pushing the boundaries of European free jazz and improvised music. By pairing two distinct quintet sessions, the release showcases Carl’s commitment to high-energy, non-idiomatic improvisation and his collaborative spirit within the experimental music community.
The album reflects the austere, uncompromising aesthetic common to the FMP catalog during the late 1980s, prioritizing the raw sonic document over commercial packaging. Rüdiger Carl, known for his work on saxophone and accordion, brought together a shifting collective of peers to explore complex textures and radical instrumental techniques. The record was received within the specialized circles of avant-garde listeners as a challenging but essential contribution to the genre, cementing the label's reputation as a critical archive for European experimental sound.
