Where it came from
Released in 1986 on the Colosseum label, this compilation serves as a curated sonic document of the regional Volksmusik traditions found in the areas surrounding the Hirschbach valley and the Birgland region of Bavaria. Produced during a period when ethnographic labels sought to preserve localized musical heritage against the homogenizing influence of mainstream pop, the album captures the specific dialect, instrumentation, and rhythmic patterns unique to these rural communities.
The album's design reflects the standard aesthetic of mid-1980s regional folk music releases, focusing on authentic representation rather than commercial artifice. By documenting performances from local ensembles, the collection functions as a cultural archive. While it remained a niche release intended primarily for listeners with a direct connection to the Upper Palatinate region, it is regarded by folklore archivists as a sincere endeavor to codify a disappearing vernacular musical style.
