Provenance

Where it came from

The Archfiend of Gilfer was released in early 2003 as a promotional insert for the third volume of Shonen Jump Magazine in North America. This promotion was a strategic effort by Upper Deck and Shonen Jump to capitalize on the rapidly growing Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game craze by bundling exclusive, high-rarity cards with magazine subscriptions to incentivize long-term readership among young enthusiasts.

The card features artwork depicting a demonic figure, consistent with the edgy, gothic aesthetic popular in early 2000s Japanese fantasy media. As a promotional Ultra Rare, it was highly sought after for both its striking prismatic foil finish and its utility in competitive play, where its ability to weaken an opponent's monster upon being sent to the graveyard made it a staple in the tactical landscape of the era's deck building.
