Artifact Durendal

Artifact Durendal was introduced as part of the Justice Hunters expansion set, which debuted in the trading card game to expand the lore and utility of the Artifact archetype. These cards were conceptualized as sentient magical weapons capable of being set in the spell and trap zone before manifesting as monsters upon being destroyed. The design draws inspiration from the legendary sword Durendal of Charlemagne’s paladin Roland, reflecting the theme of mythical weaponry reimagined within a modern dueling context.

The card was designed to function as a powerful disruption tool, specifically focusing on its ability to force opponents to re-activate their card effects or force a change in the hand size. Upon its release, it was well-received by competitive players for its tactical versatility as a Rank 5 Xyz Monster. It remains a staple for decks that can reliably summon Level 5 monsters, valued both for its aesthetic dedication to its mythological namesake and its functional role in controlling the pace of a match.
