Provenance

Where it came from

Axe of Despair was introduced in the Starter Deck: Yugi Evolution, a 2004 product released by Konami to update the original starter decks for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. This specific set was designed to provide players with a refreshed foundation featuring cards that were popular during the early seasons of the animated series, aiming to bridge the gap between casual play and the evolving competitive landscape of the time.

The card features an equip spell design that grants a significant 1000-point attack boost to the equipped monster, at the cost of sacrificing a tribute if the card is sent to the graveyard. Its aesthetic and mechanical identity reflect the dark, high-stakes atmosphere of the franchise's early lore, where equipment cards were essential tools for overcoming defensive thresholds. As a common rarity card, it served as an accessible staple for duelists looking to bolster their offensive presence in local tournament play.
