Provenance

Where it came from

The Black Illusion Ritual debuted in the 2002 Spell Ruler expansion, which served as the third core booster set for the English-language Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. As a Ritual Spell card, it was essential for summoning the iconic Relinquished monster, a key component in the strategy of the character Pegasus J. Crawford. Its inclusion in Spell Ruler marked a significant moment in the early game meta, introducing the unique mechanics of Ritual Summoning to a wider audience.

The design of the card reflects the dark, mystical aesthetic associated with Pegasus's deck, utilizing the distinct card frame reserved for Magic and Spell cards in the early TCG era. Like other Super Rare cards from this set, it features a holographic foil treatment on the card art, distinguishing it from the common and rare versions found in the same series. The card was received as a staple for players looking to incorporate the powerful Relinquished archetype into their decks, cementing its legacy as a recognizable piece of early Yu-Gi-Oh! history.
