Where it came from
The Black Skull Dragon (MRD-018) was released in the 2002 Metal Raiders expansion, the second major set for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in English. It originated from the Japanese Duel Monsters series, designed to represent the fusion of Red-Eyes Black Dragon and Summoned Skull. As one of the most powerful fusion monsters available during the game's early competitive infancy, it became an iconic symbol of the era's high-attack-power meta.
The card's design is heavily influenced by Kazuki Takahashi's original manga aesthetic, emphasizing aggressive, dark-fantasy creature motifs that defined the aesthetic of the early game. Upon its release, it was highly sought after by players due to its status as an Ultra Rare pull and its significant 3200 ATK stat, which made it a centerpiece for many casual and competitive decks during the early 2000s.
