Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier first appeared in the 2008 arcade-style game Duel Terminal in Japan, later receiving an English print in the inaugural Duel Terminal booster set. As a central figure within the Ice Barrier archetype, the monster was designed to represent the freezing, destructive power of the faction's lore. Its aesthetic, featuring serpentine, crystalline features, aligns with the icy motif established for the archetype, emphasizing both its elemental theme and its formidable role in competitive play.

The card was designed by the Konami development team as part of an experimental era for the game, utilizing the Duel Terminal arcade cabinets to introduce new mechanics and high-rarity cards. Upon release, it gained significant notoriety within the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game community due to its incredibly versatile effect, which allowed for non-targeting removal.
