Provenance

Where it came from

The Castle of Dragon Souls was introduced in the Duelist Pack: Rivals of the Pharaoh set, released in 2016. This set was designed to capture the nostalgia of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series, featuring cards famously utilized by Yugi Muto and his primary rivals during the Battle City and Pharaoh’s Memories story arcs. The card functions as a Continuous Trap, serving as both a defensive mechanism for Dragon-type monsters and a utility tool for special summoning from the graveyard.

The visual design of the card reflects the aesthetic of ancient Egyptian motifs central to the series' lore, characterized by the dramatic, high-fantasy art style consistent with early-to-mid era Yu-Gi-Oh! card design. As a rare-tier card from a Duelist Pack, it was intended to bridge the gap between collectors seeking nostalgic staples and players looking for tactical support in Dragon-centric decks. Its reception among the player base was largely defined by its utility in specific niche strategies, rather than as a centerpiece for competitive tournament play.
