Provenance

Where it came from

Curse of Anubis was first released as a card in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game within the Dark Revelation Volume 2 set, which compiled cards originally released in earlier expansions. As a trap card, it reflects the game's shift toward reactive defensive strategies, utilizing Egyptian mythological motifs that were central to the series' early aesthetic and the Battle City arc of the original manga.

The card’s illustration and mechanical design were crafted by Konami’s development team to emphasize the 'Ancient Egyptian' theme prevalent in the franchise’s lore. As a Super Rare card in the DR2 set, it was intended to offer a balance between thematic flavor and tactical utility, allowing players to shift all face-up Effect Monsters into Defense Position and negate their effects, a design choice meant to punish opponents who relied heavily on aggressive monster-based strategies.
