Where it came from
Curse of the Masked Beast first appeared as a ritual spell card in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, specifically released within the Duelist Pack: Battle City set. This set was designed to capture the nostalgia of the Battle City story arc from the original manga and anime, featuring cards used by iconic characters like Yami Yugi and Joey Wheeler, alongside those utilized by their formidable rivals.
The card was illustrated to support the Masked Beast archetype, which originated from the narrative battle involving the Rare Hunters. Its design mirrors the dark, arcane aesthetic common to ritual spells of that era, intended to facilitate the summoning of the Masked Beast Des Gardius. While it remains a common rarity card, it serves as a functional piece of the classic ritual summoning mechanics that defined early competitive play.
