Where it came from
Curse of the Masked Beast was originally released in the early years of the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game, designed to support the specific playstyle of the Masked Beast archetype. As a ritual spell card, it serves the mechanical function of summoning the high-level ritual monster The Masked Beast by tributing monsters whose total levels equal or exceed the required threshold. The card design leans into the dark, occult aesthetic that characterized the early expansions of the game, reflecting the anime-inspired themes of ritual summoning popularized during the Battle City arc.
The version from the Speed Duel: Battle City Box, indexed as SBCB-EN120, represents a reprint intended for the specialized Speed Duel format. This format was developed by Konami to provide a streamlined, accessible version of the standard game, utilizing smaller deck sizes and simplified board layouts. By including this card in the Battle City Box, the developers aimed to integrate classic ritual strategies into the faster-paced Speed Duel ecosystem, ensuring that legacy cards remained relevant for both casual enthusiasts and collectors of the box set series.
