Provenance

Where it came from

First Step Towards Infestation was released in the Duel Terminal 5b set, a unique arcade-integrated expansion for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. These sets were designed to support the Duel Terminal cabinet machines found primarily in Japan, which allowed players to scan physical cards to interact with a digital gameplay environment. This particular card was introduced as part of the 'Steelswarm' archetype, a faction known for its recurring tribute-based mechanics and darker, insectoid aesthetic.

The card was illustrated to reflect the lore of the Steelswarm, a group of malevolent entities unearthed from the earth's depths. The art direction emphasizes the thematic motifs of corruption and rapid multiplication that defined the archetype's playstyle. Upon its release, it was received as a functional support tool for players looking to manipulate their deck and graveyard to facilitate the complex summons required by the Steelswarm swarm strategy.
