Provenance

Where it came from

First Step Towards Infestation was released in the 2012 Hidden Arsenal 5: Steelswarm Invasion booster set, a release designed to bring the OCG-exclusive 'Duel Terminal' themes to a wider Western audience. As a Normal Spell card, it serves as thematic support for the Steelswarm archetype, a race of sinister, insectoid extraterrestrials characterized by their relentless swarming mechanics and self-sacrificial tribute costs.

The card's design and mechanical purpose focus on the archetype's core identity, allowing players to exchange resources to summon their high-level boss monsters. Like many cards within the Hidden Arsenal sets, the artwork emphasizes the biomechanical, horror-inspired aesthetic that defines the Steelswarm aesthetic, which was crafted to distinguish the archetype from the more traditional dragon or warrior motifs prevalent in the game at the time.
