Karakuri Watchdog mdl 313 "Saizan"

The Karakuri Watchdog mdl 313 'Saizan' was introduced in the 2011 Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game set Storm of Ragnarok. The Karakuri archetype is defined by its clockwork, automaton aesthetic, drawing heavily from the concept of Japanese karakuri ningyo—traditional mechanical puppets originating in the Edo period. These designs blend historical craftsmanship with high-fantasy steampunk elements to reflect the theme of autonomous, defensive machines.

The card was designed as part of the broader Karakuri engine, functioning as an Earth-attribute machine-type monster with a mandatory attack effect that forces the card to attack if able. Its design features a distinct, gear-heavy aesthetic common to the archetype's lead artists, who aimed to emphasize the modular and rigid nature of the mechanical units. Upon its release, it was noted primarily for its utility in facilitating Synchro Summoning strategies rather than its narrative background.
