Lightforce Sword was originally released as an Ultra Rare in the early Magic Ruler booster set in 2002, serving as a tactical trap card designed to disrupt an opponent's hand. Its function allows a player to randomly discard a card from their opponent's hand to the banishment zone, with the card returning to the hand after a set number of turns. The mechanic was built to force strategic resource management and limit the opponent's immediate options during critical phases of a duel.

The card was later reprinted as a Common in the Speed Duel Starter Decks: Destiny Masters in 2019, carrying the identification number SS01-ENA15. This inclusion was part of Konami's initiative to introduce the Speed Duel format, which uses a simplified ruleset to make the game more accessible to newcomers and nostalgic players alike. The artwork, depicting a radiant blade piercing a shadowy void, is consistent with the early Konami aesthetic, prioritizing high-contrast fantasy imagery to convey the card's disruptive effect.
