Mass Driver

Mass Driver was originally released in the early years of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, first appearing in the Legacy of Darkness expansion in 2003. It quickly became a subject of discussion within the competitive community due to its ability to repeatedly tribute monsters for direct damage, a mechanic that allowed for potent, game-ending combinations. Its inclusion in Dark Revelation Volume 1, a compilation set released in 2005, provided a wider player base access to the card during a transitional period of the game's mechanics.

The card's design features an industrial aesthetic typical of the game's early spell cards, focusing on a mechanical device intended to launch projectiles. Konami’s designers created the effect as a high-risk, high-reward tool, but as the card pool expanded, the lack of a 'once per turn' restriction led to its eventually being restricted and then banned in official competitive play. It remains a notable relic of the game's evolution from casual play to the high-efficiency combo formats of the modern era.
