Overlay Regen

Overlay Regen was released in 2012 as part of the Return of the Duelist booster set, a pivotal expansion in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game that focused heavily on supporting Xyz Summoning mechanics. This set arrived during the ZEXAL era of the franchise, a period defined by the introduction of Xyz monsters which required stacking creatures of the same level to summon powerful rank-based alternatives. As a common rarity spell card, it was designed as an accessible tool for players to add Xyz materials to their field, reflecting the game's shift toward resource management and the strategic importance of monster materials.

The card's design and mechanical utility center on its ability to target a face-up Xyz monster and attach a monster from the player's graveyard to it as an Xyz material. This ability was intended to provide a recovery and sustain option for players, allowing them to replenish the resources needed for an Xyz monster’s effect costs. While it did not reach the status of a meta-defining staple, it remains a recognized piece of card design from the mid-ZEXAL era, valued by collectors for its role in illustrating the specific mechanical trends that defined competitive play during the 2012 card season.
