Premature Burial

Premature Burial was first released in the early years of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, initially appearing as an Ultra Rare in the Pharaoh's Servant set in 2002. Designed as a high-utility spell card, it allowed players to pay 800 life points to special summon a monster from their graveyard, albeit at the cost of the card remaining on the field. The card quickly became a staple in competitive play for its ability to enable powerful combos, eventually landing it on the game's forbidden and limited lists for its influence on graveyard-centric strategies.

The version included in the 2005 Structure Deck: Spellcaster's Judgment (SD6-EN020) serves as a common rarity reprint, making the card more accessible to casual players. The artwork, which depicts a hand emerging from a grave, was created by the Konami design team to fit the dark, gothic aesthetic prevalent in the game’s early spell card library. While the card's mechanics have been significantly curtailed by modern rules and ban lists, it remains a recognized artifact of the game's formative era, representing a period where graveyard recursion was a defining mechanic.
