Puppet Master was originally introduced to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game as part of the Dark Crisis expansion in 2003. Its design draws heavily from macabre, theatrical imagery, reflecting the series' penchant for blending dark fantasy aesthetics with tactical gameplay mechanics. As an effect monster, it was specifically engineered to facilitate high-risk, high-reward plays, allowing players to revive multiple Fiend-type monsters at the cost of life points, which solidified its reputation as a niche but potent tool for graveyard-focused strategies.

The version included in the Speed Duel Starter Decks: Twisted Nightmares, identified as SS05-ENA12, was repurposed for the Speed Duel format. This format was designed by Konami to provide a more streamlined, fast-paced experience compared to the traditional game, often reissuing classic, thematic cards to fit into curated decks. While the artwork remains consistent with the original Japanese aesthetic, its inclusion in the Twisted Nightmares deck highlights its thematic alignment with decks centered around dark, supernatural entities, serving as a powerful late-game pivot for players.
