Provenance

Where it came from

Relay Soul was released in the 2016 Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG set Dragons of Legend: Unleashed, a booster collection designed to bring cards previously exclusive to the anime series into the physical game. The set aimed to satisfy fan demand for cards seen in the hands of various protagonists, translating their often highly situational or dramatic television effects into tabletop-ready mechanics.

The card was designed to mirror the dramatic "tag-team" style duels featured in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, where characters would swap out to protect one another. Its design focuses on a high-risk, high-reward strategy that centers all victory conditions on a single monster, reflecting a narrative theme of absolute reliance on one's partner. Upon release, it was noted primarily as a niche curiosity for thematic decks rather than a competitive staple, praised for its flavor while acknowledged for its precarious utility.
