Relinquished first appeared in the early years of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, originating from the Metal Raiders expansion before being reprinted in the Dark Beginning 1 set in 2004. As a ritual monster, it requires the Black Illusion Ritual spell card to be summoned, reflecting the intricate mechanics introduced to mirror the supernatural themes of the original manga. Its design, which features a grotesque, shifting entity capable of absorbing other monsters, was heavily inspired by the dark, eerie aesthetic favored by creator Kazuki Takahashi during the Duelist Kingdom story arc.
