Royal Oppression

Royal Oppression was first introduced to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in 2004, initially appearing as a rare card in the Pharaoh's Servant expansion. Its design centers on a restrictive mechanic that allows players to negate special summons at the cost of life points, reflecting a trend of 'floodgate' cards intended to punish high-speed deck strategies. The artwork, featuring a shadowy, regal figure overlooking a desolate landscape, was crafted to evoke a sense of absolute authority and stifling control.

The version from Champion Pack: Game Eight (CP08-EN013) arrived in 2009 as part of a tournament-exclusive series. These packs were distributed primarily as prizes at sanctioned events, making them a staple of the competitive landscape during that era. While the card was initially printed as an Ultra Rare, its inclusion as a Common in the Champion Pack allowed for wider accessibility among tournament players, cementing its status as a foundational utility card in control-oriented decks before it was eventually prohibited in competitive play.
