The archetype is famously rooted in Dante Alighieri's epic poem, The Divine Comedy, with each monster representing a specific figure or location from the poem's depiction of Hell. Scarm specifically draws inspiration from the Malebranche, the group of demons tasked with guarding the fifth bolgia of the eighth circle of Hell.
