Spiritualism was originally released in the Dark Beginning 2 set, which served as a compilation booster pack for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. These sets were designed to provide players with accessible reprints of cards that had previously appeared in earlier expansions, specifically drawing from the Magician's Force, Pharaonic Guardian, and Ancient Sanctuary sets. The card itself was created by Konami and Kazuki Takahashi's studio, intended to provide players with a situational utility tool for clearing potential threats from the opponent's backrow.

The design of Spiritualism reflects the game's early aesthetic, emphasizing a mystical and occult theme that was prevalent in the original manga and anime series. Mechanically, it was designed as a proactive spell card capable of returning a spell or trap card to the owner's hand without triggering its effect, a tactical choice meant to bypass destruction-based negation. While it saw moderate interest upon its initial release, its role in competitive play remained niche as the game evolved and more versatile removal options became available.
