Provenance

Where it came from

The Gates of Dark World was first introduced to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in 2011 as part of the Structure Deck: Gates of the Underworld. This field spell card was designed to support the 'Dark World' archetype, a group of monsters that trigger powerful effects when discarded from the hand by card effects. By allowing the player to discard a monster to draw a card, it provided the necessary synergy for the deck to cycle through its resources efficiently while simultaneously activating the primary mechanics of the archetype.

This specific printing, LCJW-EN253, originates from the 2013 release of Legendary Collection 4: Joey's World, a compilation set intended to celebrate cards associated with the character Joey Wheeler from the original anime. While the card itself is not linked to Joey’s deck in the show, its inclusion in the Ultra Rare rarity tier within this collection offered players a premium, shiny aesthetic for a staple utility card that remained highly relevant in competitive play due to its ability to manipulate the graveyard and hand state.
